Gratitude

September 10, 2009

Thank you all for the kind words of support and incentive about my life article on MORE.com magazine.  I deeply appreciate your spreading the word, buying more books for gifts and placing a comment on the magazine’s and my website.

You are all very special to me!

Let’s hope that the article opens the doors to better and bigger comunication vehicles.  It is essential to me to talk about the power of the Brazilian and how it is a way we often transform and more authentically love our bodies and ourselves.

Util next time, here’s my quote of the day to all of you:

“Nurture your poosie as a lush, beautiful garden – get rid of the weeds and reveal your tulips.”

A Challenging Monday

August 26, 2009

For the same reason your mouth needs to be open at the dentist, your legs need to be separated for the Brazilian Bikini Wax.

Due to the nature of my job, I deal with different people everyday and am faced with different challenges.  Sometimes, my more introverted clients give me the opportunity to try different approaches to waxing and today I had to use all of my creativity in order to make one husband very happy.

“Mary” just moved to Pleasant Hill from Utah.  Eager to immerse into her new California culture, she decided to adventure into the Brazilian and surprise her husband on their 15th anniversary.

She arrived very excited saying she had read my book and that she would like the playboy strip “shown on page xx.”  Mary didn’t have any problem undressing and jumping on the waxing table.

As is common practice with my first timers, I tried to relax her by chatting while asking open ended questions.  After the formalities, and with powder in hand, I asked her to split her legs a little so we could start the session.  Mary did not move.  Give her some time, I thought.

I then explained the procedure in detail to put her at ease.  A few minutes later, I asked her to open her legs just a little, which she did. Still, it was not enough for me to work on her.  Jokingly, I asked her if she knew where she was and what was about to happen.  She nodded, “Yes.”  Yet still, no luck in getting her legs to open more.

Glancing at the clock and thinking about my next client I decided to try my “if I don’t see you, you don’t see me” trick.  I grabbed a face towel and covered her face. Voila! It worked!  With her legs finally apart I quickly got to work.  As I kept on talking, she gradually removed the towel and apologized for her shy behavior and, more importantly, she was finally relaxed.

After we were done, she jumped off and looked at her new self in the mirror and requested another appointment.  Teasingly I asked if I’d need to bring a crow bar to work that day. Smiling, she said, “no.”

Mary was in a hurry to pick up her kids at a friend’s house.  I asked how many kids she had and when she said SIX I couldn’t help myself and said, “WOW! And you had sex and gave birth to all of them with your legs closed?” We both laughed.

Cheers,

New Opportunities

August 21, 2009

This past week there has been a lot of development for CONFESSIONS and I have been writing madly.

Specifically, I was asked to write and article for MORE.com Magazine about my life and the Brazilian Bikini Wax.  The experience has been fun and hectic.  Everyone has their own writing processes, and my is something like this:  Wax poosie at the office, run home and write a paragraph, wax a male client, come home and write another paragraph, wax, write, wax, write, wax, write.  Thankfully, I have a number of satisfied clients and  the article is nearly done.

OF COURSE, as soon as it is out I will put a link on the site for you.

Cheers,

Reny

Bonding Over the Brazilian

August 12, 2009

I take great pleasure seeing women come in groups for their Brazilian Bikini Wax (BBW).  This intimate procedure has helped deepen their friendships, while for me, adds to the meaningfulness of my work.  For some, it’s a way to gather moral support while enduring the quick pain.  While for others, the BBW visit is an escape, a trip to a secret place to bond and laugh among girls.  Depending on the friendship level of my groups, there’s nothing they hide from each other.

They arrive early, oftentimes filled with good gossip, and start their session with “Which style will each of us choose today?” This catalyzes conversations about boyfriends, husbands, vacations, bitchy friends and self-care.   I just listen quietly and, like a caring mother give my opinion when asked.  Afterwards is time to show off.  They get on the “Waxed Runway” and admire their newly waxed area in the mirror and compare.waxrunway

Despite of you might think, there’s never drama during these sessions, just the constant questions and suggestions while their giggling fill the room.

In the end, after the hugs and good byes, I often think about how this amazing profession I was meant to do, allows friends and loved ones to make quantum leaps toward intimacy and fulfill their relationships.  It makes me so happy to have the chance to alter people’s lives in such a positive way.

Thanks for your visits girls.  Thank you for the trust you all have in me and for being part of my life in a very special way.  You are all fabulous…. And don’t forget to exfoliate.

Cheers,
Reny

BOYZILIAN: The Giraffe’s Neck Factor

August 5, 2009

In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the quantity of male clients that walk through my office door.  Men come to get rid of hair in different parts of their bodies but lately (just like the women) they are focusing in the pubic area. When I perform Brazilian Bikini Waxes for boys they are called Boyzilians.

The Boyzilian is the removal of all the hair in the pubic and anal area, the testicles and sometimes the shaft. It may sound painful, but if done properly it will involve minimum pain and undeniable results.

The Giraffes Neck Factor

The Giraffe's Neck Factor

What used to be a “gay” beauty practice is now shared by men from all walks of life. Whether they are metrosexuals or old-fashioned gentlemen, they come to get waxed.  It’s amusing for me to see the extent to which men, creatures traditionally vulnerable to pain, are willing to go through this procedure.  Further, it is most surprising is to watch them return week after week. I began to wonder – “Why?”

To responde to my own inquiry I began to interview some of my clients.  The answers that emerges vary from one brave man to the next. The reasons included (but were not limited to):

•    Smooth privates make sex more pleasurable.
•    They wax at their partners’ request.
•    Others, like my women clients, do it for themselves. The feeling of being clean and smooth is addictive and they keep coming back.
•    One client told me that in the old days of porno only the women were well groomed, but the today the movies show a smooth male crotch and the pressure to match such fantasies is on.
•    And, one of my male clients said that after he started to get waxed the guys at his gym declared they will “not do the same,” yet he catches them looking and answers many questions about the procedure. He is a trendsetter.

But the real reason behind this brave act, as was confessed to me, is the Giraffe Neck Factor. If you don’t know the answer just think about this:  Which one looks longer – a giraffe’s neck pocking through a bushy tree or a neck pocking through a bare tree?  Bingo!!!

Taking CONFESSIONS to San Diego

July 30, 2009

Last Friday (7/24) was a very exciting day for me and CONFESSIONS.

Invited by Nicole Trombley from Equilibrio Massage in San Diego, I boarded the 11:35 a.m. flight with 50 books in my suitcase and my talk in hand. Inside the plane, a gentleman offered to help put my heavy bag into the overhead compartment. “Wow!  What do you have in here? Gold?”  Smiling, I showed him my book. He looked at it and exclaimed, “Interesting” and went on his merry way.

After take off, he came by and asked if he could take the book to his seat. A few minutes later I heard people laughing a few rows behind me. I looked back and he was showing the book to other passengers. From his seat, he yelled, “Reny, can we buy a few books, and would you sign them for us?” There were 4 guys and 2 women who worked together and were returning from a business meeting. They invited me to their row and asked a world of questions about the book and waxing. By the time we landed they all followed me out of the plane and I found myself opening my suitcase in the middle of Gate 8, and signing several books to their wives. The ladies promised to adventure into the Brazilian on their next trip to the Bay Area. Yahhooo!!!

I spent the day preparing and by 6:30 p.m. I was at the Blue Lotus Center where Equilibrio Massage is housed. The owner, Nicole, had prepared a beautiful event with champagne and appetizers for 50 of her friends and clients. Nicole is an expert in maternity massage and has a dedicated following. Terry, my son’s friend, was our designated camera man. In short, the setting was prepared: attendees, champagne, appetizers and digital recording. Now, all that I had to do was speak – gulp.

Nicole gave me a warm welcome and I talked about my career as a waxer, my passion for this art and how CONFESSIONS was born. Again, I was extremely nervous. My throat was dry, and I could feel my face burning. I forgot some of my lines. I improvised, and little by little I relaxed. Public speaking is the third most common phobia, right after death and doctors. I am no exception. Still, the fun part is the fact that no one ever knows what I am supposed to say, so I just followed the flow of things and it turn out fabulous! See for yourself – PHOTOS.

I have been blessed to participate in several event, and I am always impressed by my audiences’ questions. From, “what inspired me to write CONFESSIONS” to “what are the tips for a first time client,” I was able to share my experience and the wonders of getting a BBW. I was delighted later, when guests approached me saying that I inspired them to try the BBW.  Even an esthetician who had been afraid of doing it bombarded me with questions and was now willing to try it. More Yaaahho!!!!!

Many of you have heard me say that a book project is tough. One does not do it for the attention. I did it because I love to see people laugh and empowered. This is why it was exciting to see the long line of women with CONFESSIONS in hand, waiting in line for me to sign their copy and ready to try this transformative practice.

From across the table where I was seated signing the books I could see my son Julio busy with sales, Nicole taking care of everyone, and Terry taking photos while guests enjoyed the event. At that moment I realized how lucky I am for having Julio by my side working with me and teaching me how to manage this book project, as well as others who support me in the endeavor.

At the end of the night Julio told me he was teary eyed when he saw me on stage, and how proud he was of me. What a great way to end a beautiful and busy day!!!

Cheers,
Reny

Solutions to Recent Waxing Concerns

July 26, 2009

This past march in New Jersey, Brazilian Bikini Waxing (BBW) was almost banned. MSN published an article calling attention to the health risks involving this procedure. Clearly, this is of concern to me and I want to ensure my clients and readers make a wise decision when choosing the right esthetician and the proper self-care.

The golden rule is – use your common sense. Beyond that, here are some simple tips from my three decades in the waxing field.

  • Ask your friends for a referral. Some of my clients have been with me for over 10 years. Today, I wax their daughters, granddaughters, cousins and friends. Trust is built with experience and as a new waxee go to estheticians your contacts trust.
  • Find a reputable professional. It may surprise you to know that there are unlicensed estheticians everywhere. State Boards are under staffed and cannot inspect every salon. Check or ask about a current license at the premises chosen. Don’t be afraid to ask the waxer about her hygiene standards. It is our job to make you feel safe and comfortable while under our care.
  • Make sure your licensed waxer has a clean practice. Her room should remind you of your doctor’s office with clean sheets, sterilized supplies and absolutely no double dipping in the wax. If waxing rollers are used, ensure either the rollers are disposable or have been disinfected.
  • Wait 24 hours before resuming intercourse or entering a hot tub. The waxing process removes hair by its roots and leaves the pores open, which may allow secretion and bacteria to penetrate. As eager as you might be to show off your new self, I recommend waiting 24 hours to resume intercourse or enter a hot tub to prevent folicullitis – an infection of the hair follicles.
  • Apply 1% Hydrocortisone. Apply hydrocortisone for a few days after waxing in order to prevent infection.  Pay attention to any abnormal feeling down there such as tender spots, rashes or tear of the skin, swelling and itching. Check yourself and make sure to see your doctor if the symptoms persist.

Lastly, while these facts are a little disturbing, being an educated client is your responsibility. Again, I stress the use of referrals and licensed estheticians. On a positive note, remember that thousands of these procedures are done daily with absolutely no problems. Put yourself in the right hands and enjoy the “smooth” results.

Praise for Reny and CONFESSIONS

April 1, 2009

From Arline Klatte and Beth Lisick,
Porch Light storytelling series, San Francisco

“Reny’s performance was funny, energetic, and highly entertaining. Our audience loved her!”

From Kurt Bodden, host of Talk Show Live: San Francisco

“I wanted Reny to be a guest on my talk show pretty much from the minute I met her. She just exudes warmth and enthusiasm, and she’s in a line of work that made me say, “Wait — what? Tell me more about that.”

Clearly I’m not the only one who feels that way. Our show takes place in a nightclub setting with a live audience, and it was packed that night — largely with loyal, vocal supporters of Reny. The turnout really illustrated the rapport that she builds with her clients, which led to the wonderful stories in her book.

And if anyone present was squeamish about her subject, she put them at ease right away with her confidence and directness, backed up by her beauty and endearing personality. The conversation was frank and sexy, but warmhearted rather than raunchy.

Her ability to connect with people is rare and delightful.”
